Fortunately for the students and community of Concord, "graduation season" always brings with it a full calendar for patrons and audiences in The Alexander Fine Arts Center. As semesters and school years wind down, students wrapping up their degrees in theatre, art, or music are required to produce plays, exhibit their artwork, or give senior recitals for the public to enjoy.

Last Monday, the public showed up in large numbers at the Arthur Butcher Gallery for the opening of the Senior Art Exhibition of Concord students Jodie Cox, Lena Deel, and Tina Huang.

All three women said they were very pleased with the turnout Monday's reception, and each sold at least one piece of art.

"I was pleasantly surprised," said Huang, who brought several of her own porcelien tiles and ceramic scultpures to the exhibition. "I've been to a lot of senior art shows and I've never seen this many people,"

"It's actually pretty rare that each student in the show sells at least one piece in the same night," added Cox, whose many watercolor paintings on display were inspired by her travels through France last summer.

Deel, whose sculptures and charcoal drawings were all inspired by a lifelong fascination with equestrrian activities, added that she felt each artist's pieces worked well together in the exhibition.

"The crowd seemed very pleased with the whole show," Deel said. "People I knew may have come to see my work, but when they saw Tina or Jodie's work they were amazed with the quality. I think we were very lucky to have the three of us together."

Concord President, Dr. Gregory Aloia was among those in attendance at the reception and expressed his appreciation for the artists and their work.

"I'm not an artist myself, but I've always had a love for art," he said. "I've always loved how they take the different colors and themes and express feelings and ideas."

The exhibition will continue in the Arthur Butcher Gallery until Friday, December 5.

"The inspiration for
my art comes from
working with horses...
My work is a continuation
of that childhood
passion in a form that
others can now enjoy." - Lena Deel

"I painted with the intention
of having more
than a photograph to
show… I also wanted
to make myself paint
in a way that made me
step out of my norm." - Jodie Cox

"The colors and transparency
within each
artwork is my favorite
aspect about them. I
also like that I get to
use all the tools and
materials that I enjoy." - Tina Huang
