Michael Curry, former Vice President of Admissions and Financial Aid, and Jim Cannon, former Vice President of Business and Finance, have stepped down from their positions.
At the end of the 2007 Spring Semester, the faculty had a vote of whether or not they had confidence in the abilities of the Vice Presidents. Curry and Cannon both received a substantial amount of 'no confidence' votes.
Hugh Campbell, Faculty Representative for the Board of Governors, said this was not an overnight decision for President Aloia.
"He talked to Mr. Cannon and Mr. Curry about what they did in terms of their philosophy. He was very deliberate; he made the decision to go with new leadership."
"All the Vice Presidents are considered 'willed and pleasured employees' which means they serve at the will and pleasure of the president," Campbell said. Faculty members are not a part of this group.
"Dr. Aloia did have the option to look at their performance, look at their philosophy, to examine everything such as the vote of 'no confidence.' He discussed this with the board and he made the decision to make a change in leadership."
Campbell explained that the vote of 'no confidence' is strictly advisory; however, the Board of Governors agreed with Aloia that there needed to be a change in leadership. Campbell said the BOG is very happy with Aloia's progress so far.
"The big thing that they're happy with is that he's working very diligently to get the budget issues around here under control," Campbell said.
Aloia is trying to make internal adjustments on the budget and make sure that Concord is "physically sound." He says Aloia is also actively searching for off-campus revenue sources such as grant money and donations to the institution.
Under the previous leadership in the Business and Finance Office, Campbell said they did not have a "true budgetary process."
"A true budgetary process starts early, then divisions figure out what kinds of needs they have financially. Then based upon past history and state need and demonstrated needs, they get X amount of dollars. That's a true budgetary process," Campbell said. Jim Cannon said his intentions are to retire next September. He is currently still employed here at Concord. Upon staff evaluation, President Aloia said Cannon's services would be more beneficial to research endeavors for Concord rather than maintaining his former position Jim Cannon said his intentions are to retire next September.
