Valentine's Day isn't as bad as some make it out to be

Valentine's Day has come and gone, and the cynics appeared as usual to denounce their anti-holiday. Despite what others may say, Valentine's Day can be enjoyable even if you don't have a boyfriend or girlfriend.
Love is a great emotion, and a holiday is a fun way to celebrate it. You don't have to think of it as a couples' holiday; I assume you love your family and your friends too. You can use this day to tell relatives and friends how much you appreciate them. Sometimes it may be hard to say, and you may feel stupid just blurting it out at random, so this is the opportunity to say it without sounding or feeling silly.

Also, holidays in general just make people happy. Why not take advantage of as many of these days as possible? Use Valentine's Day as an excuse to do something special that you love. Take a short vacation, visit a friend, go to a movie, buy something for yourself, or eat at your favorite restaurant. You don't have to have a partner to enjoy a holiday.
Or if you don't want to use this holiday to pamper yourself, use it as an excuse to do something nice for someone else. Write someone a nice note, compliment someone, or give a little gift to lift his or her spirits. You can do it personally or anonymously-whichever is the most fun. Either way, someone's day will be brighter.
Similarly, if you know someone else as lonely as you are, spend the day together. Hang out and watch funny movies, eat junk food, and enjoy each other's company. A Valentine's Day with a group of single friends can sometimes be better than one with a significant other.

And if you find yourself single and bored on Valentine's Day and you refuse to take any of my previous suggestions, request to work that day. Tons of people would love to take the day off and spend it with their loved ones, so they will appreciate you working on a holiday in their place. Why not get paid while being distracted from your most hated day of the year?
Hopefully you can find a way to enjoy the break from the monotony when Valentine's Day rolls around again next year.
