Most people think about interviews they are filled with dread. "Did I do well?" "How should I act?" and "Did I answer that question right?" are thoughts that plague a person's mind after they're done with an interview. However, interviews do not have to inspire such fear in a person, with a little advice they could be the most effective tools to sell yourself to a potential employer.
Last Thursday night Dr. Aloia gave just such advice to the students who attended his interview workshop "Preparing for Your Career". According to Aloia, the most important thing to remember is that your interview depends on nothing other than yourself. "If you think you can, you can," said Aloia, "If you think you can't, you can't."
Aloia also stressed that no one has a reason to doubt themselves. "Everyone is a multi-million dollar enterprise," he said. Likewise, everyone should think of themselves as above-average in every aspect. "You are better than sugar-water," he said, and people make millions of dollars selling that.
Aloia told the students that he learned these interview techniques by making his own mistakes and learning from them. He went on his own interviews, saw what he needed to work on, worked on it and now knows what works.
"I want to share these experiences with students so that they don't make the same mistakes I did," said Aloia, "I want to give back all the knowledge I've gotten in order to help others be successful." He says that these skills made him more confident in his own abilities and he wants to pass them on so that Concord's students can be more confident.
For students who couldn't attend the workshop, Aloia says that he want them to remember to never limit themselves. "Remember," he says, "you are all worth millions of dollars."
