The McNair Scholars Program is a federally funded program named in honor of Dr. Ronald E. McNair, an ill-fated member of the 1986 Challenger crew. It offers qualifying college students from disadvantaged backgrounds an opportunity to prepare academically and socially for the rigors of graduate study. Preparatory services include: a faculty-supervised research experience in one's major, assistance with the graduate admissions process, program-sponsored trips to prospective graduate schools and professional conferences, research-related workshops/seminars, and academic counseling. Scholars also earn academic credit for their research and a small research stipend.

Concord University is one of two institutions in West Virginia to host a McNair Scholars Program. Since its inception in 1995, more than 195 students have participated in the program. Three Scholars to date have earned Ph.D.s: Lisa M. Darlington, Angela Frye-Keaton, and Rebecca Ryan.
