Concord's Relay for Life is calling on students and faculty to join in the effort to fight cancer. Dr. Edwards, in charge of the fundraiser, has joined with CAC (Colleges Against Cancer) to "Paint the Campus Purple" all week in order to make people aware of different types of cancer and promote involvement with Relay for Life, which will take place Saturday, April 25, 2009 at Concord University.

Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society's signature fundraiser to raise money for cancer awareness and research. It is a 24-hour event where teams of people come together at a school, fairground or park and take turns walking or running laps. There is also the "survivor lap" when cancer survivors walk a lap to represent their victory over the disease. The track will be lit with luminaries to signify loved ones who have been lost due to cancer.

This is Concord's eighth year in participating with Relay. "We started doing Relay for Life because one of our fellow faculty members had died of cancer the summer before," Dr. Edwards explained.
This year the committee for Relay for Life has chosen a carnival theme. "Soon we are going to go into the elementary schools to try and get kids and their families involved. This is a family event and even if you do not have a team, you can come out to support a good cause. There will be food, games and activities for people of all ages."

In correlation with "Paint the Campus Purple" week, where there will be purple signs and decorations around campus to promote cancer awareness, there will be luminary sales and team sign-ups in the student center until Thursday afternoon. Dr. Edwards encourages everyone to join or make a team. "Almost everyone has been touched by cancer; whether it is a friend, family member or even an acquaintance, most people know someone who has been affected by the disease. Painting the campus purple signifies the fundraiser's signature color."

Teams are in full swing with fundraising. Stop by the dorms every Wednesday for pizza night where students can purchase a large Little Caesars pizza for only $7 or by the slice for $1. The Resident Directors' parking spots are being raffled as well in order to raise money for Relay. Tickets are sold at all dorms for $1 per ticket. Drawing for winners will take place each week until Relay.

The CU Divas team is selling peanut butter or coconut Easter eggs to raise funds. Orders must be in by Monday, April 6. They are also raffling a quilt; tickets are $6 for 5 chances or $1 per ticket. Contact Andrea Webb at 304-384-5271 to place Easter egg orders or to buy raffle tickets.
Dr. Edwards's final thoughts on Relay are ones of encouragement to those interested in participating. "If you have been affected by cancer or know someone who has, joining or creating a team is a great way to give back to the community."
