CU to offer M.Ed. in Health Promotion
Press Release
Beginning this fall,
“The M.Ed. in Health Promotion is appropriate for those with undergraduate degrees in a variety of areas including health education, nursing, sociology, psychology, allied health and environmental studies,” noted Dr. Cheryl Trull, interim director of graduate studies. “The goal of this specialization is to prepare highly trained health educators to meet the health needs of our society in a variety of work settings including community and public health agencies, worksite and health promotion programs, schools (for those currently holding a license in another field), and other health organizations.
“The content specialization in health promotion emphasizes primary prevention and the empowerment of communities to address their own health and social needs in ways that can improve the health status of the world and reduce health care costs,” she concluded.
According to Dr. H. David Campbell, assistant professor of health and physical education, “Individuals are introduced to the unique opportunity each has as a health professional to effect knowledge, attitudes and behaviors related to health issues and are trained in health promotion strategies and interventions to impact individuals and communities.”
Dr. Eloise M. Elliott, professor of physical education, also noted that, “This is a progressive content area specialization, with an emphasis on current health topics, including obesity, and will focus on evaluation, program planning, and implementation of interventional strategies in a variety of settings. “
