SGA Meeting: Green Sustainability, Elsaid questioned
Ryan Blankenship
This week in the Student Government meeting, various officer reports as well as committee reports were given, but very little business was accomplished due to a lack of quorum.
Sigma Tau Gamma Representative Bill Lewis delivered the Concord University Student Affairs committee report and stated that updated attendance and visitation policies were in front of the President’s Cabinet for review as well as the fact that the committee was looking into alternative tailgating options.
The Higher Education committee notified the body that they had emailed thank you cards to the legislators for the sake of the ‘green’ movement on campus.
The Judicial Reform committee is discussing establishing community service punishments as well as better hearing board procedures. Resolutions should come soon.
The Green Sustainability committee is meeting back and forth with Rick Dillon and President Aloia to discuss ways and methods to make the campus more ‘green’ such as fixing the outdated heaters and air conditioners in the dorms.
During the Attorney General’s report, the question was submitted as to whether or not the candidate Robert Elsaid may run considering some claimed he missed the candidate Rules and Regulations meeting, with attendance mandated by the Election Committee before a candidate may run with the exceptions being prior notice of absence or a class. The findings of the investigations were that Elsaid had a class and therefore was eligible.
During the Business Manager’s report, the deadline for filing purchase orders is April 25th, said Business Manager Kearns.
The Ombudsman received a number of complaints this week and discussed meeting with Dr. Mainland to discuss music complaints, food variety in the cafeteria, FERPA regulations with regards to RA’s with Rick Dillon, Fall Break with regards to athletes, more hours in the cafeteria (Dining and Housing are working on that), and a complaint about hallways in different buildings being labeled to direct traffic better. A complaint was also received with regards to prepaying at South of Sicily. Faculty do not have to prepay. She also received a complaint about a specific Professor not holding her office hours.
The only business in the unfinished business segment was an amendment determining the roles of committee chairs, which was sent back to the SGA Affairs committee.
During new business, several resolutions came forward, but only two were heard. One establishes the hearing board procedure and the other establishes community service for punishment. Both passed to be heard. Beyond this point, quorum was lost. President Prince called for a special SGA meeting this Wednesday, immediately following the first to conduct last minute business before the timeline expires for the semester. Please attend if at all possible to both.
