The Concord Mountain Lions are a respectable 18-11 on the baseball season, but losing three of four from West Virginia State over the weekend is a tough pill to swallow in a battle between two of the better WVIC conference teams as Concord lost three 1 run games during the four game series. Losing 4-2 in the first game Friday before getting an 11-4 win in the 2nd game. Saturday’s doubleheader was two 1 loss games as Concord lost 4-3 and 4-2. Concord will look to get back on track this week versus West Virginia Wesleyan in a home and home four game series Wednesday and Thursday with Concord playing West Virginia Wesleyan Thursday afternoon in Athens.

As for the Lady Lions, the softball team has a pathetic 1-20 record so far on the season, and Concord was 3-34 a season ago. The question is when will these ladies finally win something? The Lady Lions did get a 6-5 win over Mountain State back on March 24th, only to be blown away 22-4 in the 2nd game of a doubleheader. Concord’s best shot comes today when Concord plays Bluefield State in a doubleheader beginning at 3:00pm. Bluefield State has 3 wins on the season, and unfortunately two of those came versus Concord on March 26th when the Lady Lions fell 13-3 and 6-2. The Lady Lions have been a joke this season and last season as well. Hopefully today can be the beginning of a turnaround for this program because 1-20 is down right pathetic.

Locally in College Baseball the West Virginia Mountaineers are currently 26-7 on the season and are 10-2 in the Big East Conference defeated Maryland Eastern Shore 5-4 in Non-Conference action on Monday, and over the weekend WVU took two of three from St. John’s winning 9-3, falling 10-5, and winning the 3rd game 16-2. WVU will face Duquesne and Notre Dame this upcoming week.

The Marshall Thundering Herd currently are 14-20 on the season after dropping two of three versus UAB over the weekend losing 6-4, winning 6-4, and losing 13-6. Marshall will face Ohio, Eastern Kentucky, and Rice this upcoming week.

The Virginia Tech Hokies are 21-12 on the season, but are 7-10 in the ACC swept Maryland in a three game series over the weekend winning 5-3, 4-3, and 5-0 over the Terps. The Hokies will face High Point and Clemson this upcoming week.

The 14th ranked Virginia Cavilers currently are 28-7-1 overall and 9-6-1 in the ACC split the three game series with 11th ranked Georgia Tech over the weekend with Georgia Tech winning game 1 by the score of 7-6. UVA would win game 2 winning 11-10, and they would tie the third game in the series 4-4. UVA will face Radford and Boston College this upcoming week.

In Major League Baseball opening day was a week ago and there have been a few surprises as Toronto, Baltimore, Kansas City, Seattle, Florida and San Diego are all off to good starts and are up top on their divisions after two series where they usually are toward the bottom. Other teams such as the Washington Nationals have continued what they did last year, that being be in last place. Last season the Nationals finished the year 59-102 and currently is the only winless team on the season at 0-7.

Longtime Philadelphia Phillies broadcaster Harry Kalas died on Monday at the age of 72 after collapsing shortly before calling the Philadelphia Phillies versus Washington Nationals Monday afternoon game.

Jermaine Dye and Paul Konerko of the Chicago White Sox went back to back on Monday and in the process both recorded their 300 career home runs.

Last Wednesday Los Angeles Angels rookie P Nick Adenhart pitched six scoreless innings before the bullpen eventually blew the 4 run lead to give the Oakland Athletics a 6-4 victory. Adenhart would allow 7 hits and strike out 5 in his 6 innings of work. Tragically however Adenhart a 22 year old from Silver Spring, MD was killed when a driver ran thru a light killing Adenhart and two of his three passengers as he was on his way home from the game.

Los Angles Dodgers 2B Orlando Hudson hit for the cycle on Monday in the Dodgers 11-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants. Hudson would hit a home run, triple, double, and a single in the game for the cycle.

The New York Mets opened up their new Stadium Citi Field on Monday only to fall 6-5 to the San Diego Padres. Citi Field replaced the Mets former home Shea Stadium.

The New York Yankees will open up their new Yankee Stadium on Thursday when they host the Cleveland Indians at 1:05pm.

Key weekend series this week are the Baltimore Orioles versus the Boston Red Sox, Chicago White Sox versus the Tampa Bay Rays, and the St. Louis Cardinals versus the Chicago Cubs.
