The Concord Mountain Lions finished off the regular season in convincing fashion winning 9 straight to enter the WVIAC Conference tournament as a 2 seed. Concord finished the season with a 27-11 record and 9-5 in the Southern Division of the WVIAC Conference. The Mountain Lions will face Shepherd in the 1st round of the WVIAC Conference tournament in double elimination. Concord swept Shepherd during the regular season winning 7-6, 6-5, and 5-4 in a 3 game series on April 4th and 5th. Hopefully this will hold well for Concord when they face Shepherd tomorrow night at 7:00pm in Vienna, WV. If Concord happens to win they will face the winner of West Virginia State and Davis & Elkins. If Concord loses to Shepherd they would then face the winner of Fairmont State and Seton Hill to fight off elimination.

The Concord Lady Lions softball season wasn’t quite as good as the baseball team this spring, as the Lady Lions finished the season at 1-32. After the comments I made a couple weeks ago calling their then 1-20 record pathetic the softball team would lose their final 12 games by the scores of 4-3, 11-1, 18-2, 15-0, 11-1, 10-1, 8-0, 18-1, 13-1, and 10-1. Calling their record pathetic was my attempt to light a spark and try and get the team to attempt to turn things around these past two weeks. Unfortunately they were unable to do so. 1-32 is a pretty bad record and hopefully next season will be different. The coaching staff has only been here for 1 season and it takes time to turn teams around, and I believe they will be able to do so especially with a good recruiting class coming in I expect to see a much improved softball team next season here in Athens.

The West Virginia Mountaineers had a tough week as they were swept by South Florida in a 3 game series down in Tampa, Florida. WVU would lose 8-3, 11-2, and 9-6 over the weekend. WVU fell to 28-12 on the season and fall to 11-7 in the Big East Conference after being swept by Conference leading South Florida. WVU will look to get back on track with non-conference games versus Morehead State and Maryland this week, before a 3 game series versus Rutgers this weekend.

The Marshall Thundering Herd had a tough week as well as the Herd were swept by Houston over the weekend in a 3 game series losing 7-0, 12-4, and 9-8 in 10 innings. The Herd are now 16-25 overall, but 6-12 in Conference USA. Marshall will face Georgetown (KY) and Youngstown State this week, with a 3 game series in Orlando versus Central Florida over the weekend.

The Virginia Tech Hokies fell to 10-13 in the ACC Conference and 25-17 overall on the season after the Hokies lost 2 of 3 to the 14th ranked Miami Hurricanes over the weekend. The Hokies would lose 4-1 in Friday’s game, win 7-4 on Saturday, and would lose 11-3 on Sunday. The Hokies will face High Point and Radford in home games this week before facing 12th ranked Florida State on the road for a three game series beginning Friday evening at 6:00pm.

The 15th ranked Virginia Cavilers improved to 34-9-1 on the season and 13-8-1 in the ACC after the Cavs were able to take 2 of 3 from NC State over the weekend. UVA would win the first two of the series coming away with a 6-2 win on Friday and a 6-3 win on Saturday. On Sunday however NC State would get the better of Virginia and defeat UVA 7-6 Virginia is home this week as they face Liberty in a non-conference game on Tuesday before facing Duke for a three game series beginning on Friday night at 7:00pm.

In Major League Baseball’s biggest rivalry, the Boston Red Sox were able to sweep the New York Yankees in a 3 game series over the weekend. The series was highlighted by the Boston Red Sox come from behind victory on Saturday. The Boston Red Sox were down 6-0 going to the bottom of the 4th inning before rallying for 5 runs in the bottom of the 4th to trail by a run and eventually the Boston Red Sox would take control and defeat the New York Yankees 16-11.

The Washington Nationals have struggled on the season bur Rookie Pitcher Jordan Zimmerman has been one of the few exceptions, as Zimmerman has improved to 2-0 on the season after pitching 5 1/3 innings on Saturday and giving up only 1 run on 6 hits. Zimmerman would also strike out 6 as the rookie helped give the Washington Nationals an 8-1 victory over the New York Mets. Zimmerman now has half the Nationals wins on the season, as Washington is currently a league worst 4-14 so far on the season.

The key games this upcoming weekend are the New York Mets taking on the Philadelphia Phillies Saturday afternoon at 3:40pm on Fox, and the Chicago White Sox will take on the Texas Rangers on ESPN Sunday Night Baseball at 8:05pm.
