Let’s talk safety. While walking on campus recently after dark, I noticed that we have a problem with lack of proper street lighting. As a commuter, I usually park on a lot that is across the street from campus. There is very little outside lighting from the parking lot adjacent to the student center.Although there is some lighting, it certainly is not enough. There is way too much space in between the light posts and during the commute, anything could happen. Let’s keep in mind that it gets darker earlier during the fall and winter months. I’m not suggesting lighting up campus like a sunny day at the beach; I’m suggesting we create safer areas for commuters, students walking to and from night classes, evening events, or students studying at the library.
With the new extended hours for the library, limited outside lighting at midnight could cause moments of anxiety while walking back to your dorm or car. Ground level lighting around dark areas would be very beneficial, especially around the dorms and parking lots. While I’m at it, I might as well mention how dark it is walking to and from the CVS area. It appears some lights are not burning and in some areas there need to be more lights added. This is a serious safety issue considering CVS and Gino’s are really the only “shopping highlights” of Athens. After all, this is supposed to be a college town, so light it up!
At Concord, there are many systems in place to prevent sexual harassment and sexual assault from occurring. These systems include a sexual harassment and assault team, many brochures on the topic, and the mandatory escort of all visitors in and out of the dorms. During the University 100 Orientation, there was a lecture about the preventions of sexual harassment. Well, it seems like we are leaving a major step out. How is our campus safe if it’s not well lit? Light it up! Although all students at Concord are expected to be responsible and make their own decisions, proper and sufficient lighting will further ensure the safety of its students. If you have any comments or suggestions on the issue of lighting on campus, email us at concordian@concord.edu.
The Town of Athens is the culprit behind the streetlights on every other pole idea. It's then up to the individual property owners to pay the electric company to stick up another light if they so desire. (Continued…)
I completely agree. As a commuter who has been driving to campus for 3 1/2 years, I can say with certainty that the lighting situation is terrible. When I have to walk to my car after dark, I make sure that I'm always on the phone with someone, they know where I'm at, and my keys are in my hand and ready for my car!

I have two theories about the lack of light:
1. Because the average age of Athens' residents is 135, they all go to bed at 7pm and don't want lights to interrupt their sleep. (Continued…)
