Homecoming week kicked off on a cold wet Monday morning as students arrived to school in their pajamas and campaigning began for Homecoming King and Queen.

Candidates advertised their candidacy all over campus with signs ranging from Michael Jackson’s Thriller to The Beatles and Abbey Road.

Despite the chilly weather, the candidates for Alpha Sigma Alpha and Pi Kappa Phi were campaigning for votes next to the Student Center.

Rachel Lucas, the president and candidate of Alpha Sigma Alpha, explained their reason for braving the elements, “We’re really dedicated and pumped about winning.  We’re excited to get started.”

“Homecoming is our favorite activity.  It’s a lot of work, but always a good time…Overall, Homecoming is like the face of your fraternity or sorority for your school,” said Lucas as she expressed the importance of Homecoming to Greek organizations on campus.

The Concord Alpha Sigma Alpha’s have certainly used Homecoming as the face of their chapter, as they are recognized in their national organization for the having the most Homecoming Queens.  The Concord chapter also boasts that the current national president of Alpha Sigma Alpha, Cindy Kelly, was a former Concord softball player.

Curtis Hill, the candidate for Pi Kappa Phi, added to the importance of Homecoming stating, “I’ve been raised here my whole life and this is what this towns about.”

Alpha Sigma Alpha and Pi Kappa Phi advertised their bid for Homecoming King and Queen by handing out yo-yo’s, candy, rubber ducks, condoms, and buttons.
