New VISTAs Courtney Hoover and Trent Estep have been assisting University 100 courses with a variety of service projects.

VISTA is an acronym for “Volunteer In Service To America” and it is part of AmeriCorps. This is a national service program designed to fight poverty.

Hoover and Estep began working in August, replacing Jesse Call and Alex Overmiller.

“Trent Estep and I go into the classes and let students vote on which project they would like to participate in,” Hoover said. “We go back a tally up the results. Trent and I get in touch with local community organizations to see if they need help and those are the organizations we put on the ballot.”

There have been a total of 18 service projects completed and a total of 185 students have participated. The one project left is the WeCan Christmas Party.

The groups and organizations that they have worked with include: Lola Lives (Car Show), Mercer County Animal Shelter, Brush Creek Falls, Autumn Fest, New River Gorge Clean up (Hinton to Sandstone), National Public Lands Day, Pipestem State Park, Make-A-Child Smile, Haunted Mine in Pocahontas, VA, WeCan Ghost Walk in Bramwell, WV, Princeton Recreation Center Haunted House, Roast of Judge Frasier, Lashmeet/Matoaka School Clean-up, Bluefield Union Mission, Princeton Health Care Center, Fall Festival in Athens, Mercer County 4-H Camp.
