Communication Breakdown: Independence = Responsibility
Chris Slater
Welcome to the latest edition of “Communication Breakdown.” Let me break it down for you.
Well, I did it. I signed the lease to my new apartment on Monday. I have moved out on my own for the first time.
It feels very empowering to be out on my own. On the flipside, it’s a little nerve-wracking as well.
Living by yourself is an important step in life. You’re on your own. With this new-found independence comes a new set of responsibilities.
You have to be ready to commit to living on your own. It’s not like the dorms - the “real world” is a lot different than what
To be able to make this work, you need to be ready for everything this entails. Bills, responsibilities, having money, more bills, the list goes on.
I think I’m finally ready for it. Not being responsible has been a trademark of mine for the first 20-odd years of my life. I’m ready to change that and move forward with the next phase of my life.
Moving out and being independent isn’t for everybody. If you are considering something like this, you need to make sure you can commit to something of this magnitude. You need to make sure you have a steady job and a reliable automobile, just to start off.
If you don’t have those, in addition to an ability to budget money, then living on your own doesn’t seem like a great idea. If you think you can handle it, then all the power to you. Just be careful.
The biggest issue that faces most students when they move out on their own is how to manage everything. If you’re like most commuter students, the three biggest things in your life right now are school, your job, and your apartment/house. You have to make sure all three of those get the attention they need, without neglecting any of the others.
It’s a tricky combination of how to make time for everything. It’s something I’m excited about doing. By the time you read this, I will have begun the process of moving into my apartment. Should be fun; I’ll let you know how it goes.
