Denise Ward and Rebecca Eerenburg presented their senior exhibit Unique Realization: A Hands on Experience in the Arthur Butcher Gallery of the Alexander Fine Art Center this past Monday.
The art show’s name came from a combination of the two artists’ work; Denise’s focusing on art to be felt by touch, creating art for the blind and visually impaired, while Rebecca’s focuses on art that is not usually taught in elementary, middle, and high school levels.
Each artist is an art education major, inspiring to teach art. Rebecca said, “if you’re an art major, you must have a show your senior year. Mine has six different works, but they are all related.”
Denise had ten different works for her show. “My art is for my future students. I don’t know what kind of disabilities my students may have in the future.” Dr. Reidmiller inspired her because a lot of her lessons had examples of art working with blind and visually impaired.
She was also inspired by Queen Brooks. Denise said, “I love to touch things. I love the texture and there are some things that you cannot touch.” Denise set up her art show by placing her textured works under cloths so that you feel it before seeing it.
“I took away the association so that you can experience the picture through other senses besides touch. Everyone perceives it differently,” Denise said. Most of her works are mainly naturalistic with animals as well as pottery designs inspired by the Indian tribe named Minbres.
“This gives my art the historical element,” Denise said, “I went to the library here at
Her favorite piece was of a coyote. She had real coyote ears, skin, and fur on the disk, giving it many different, interesting textures. Last Friday Denise, “worked with a blind student doing monoprinting and the student was most interested in all of the different textures.”
Rebecca said, “Wednesday is when my art show will be emphasized. I am going to focus on the process of making art. I will have a table with all kinds of art supplies laid out so that people can make their own art and own composition.”
Rebecca finger painted with preschoolers and fifth graders to create one of her works displayed at her show. Almost every piece of art she has on display is full of color. “I love color and most of my work has the rainbow,” Rebecca said.
“I’m a triple major in education, art education, and studio work. I’ve brought the three all together to teach more than painting and paper,” Rebecca said, “my motivation all started because in school, it’s all paper and paint because it is cheaper.”
Rebecca wanted to do a mosaic for her art show because “I want to do this in my classroom one day and show students how to do this type of art,” Rebecca said.
Rebecca’s art show will be tonight starting at
