Concord’s Student Activities Committee recently decided to change its name to Student Operated Activity Planning.

“The word committee seemed a bit too unofficial to us. Also, by including ‘student operated’ in the name, it lets everyone know that it’s an organization run by the students for the students,” SOAP President Stephanie Bailey said.

Members of the organization voted on the name change, and SOAP won the majority.

“Unfortunately due to graduating members and busy schedules, our numbers have dwindled. This is another reason we decided a name change was in order; we’re rebuilding the organization from the ground up,” Bailey said.

Now, instead of SAC, you will see the acronym SOAP on their event posters, but the organization is composed of the same people under advisor Anna Hardy and continues the same duties.

The organization views, books, sets up, and generally helps entertainment acts that come to Concord.

“We will do things differently in ways that should only improve upon what SAC did for the campus. We want to keep the same spirit that SAC held. We’re still the same people, with the same interests in mind; we just have a shiny new name tag,” Bailey said.

This semester, SOAP will host a Kid’s Christmas Party on Saturday at 6 p.m. in Subway Sides, and an 80’s Dance Party presented jointly with the Gay-Straight Alliance.

Next semester also promises a variety of entertainment for students. “We are trying to bring in things that are more interactive rather than events that one simply attends,” Bailey said.

However, with the current semester coming to a close, the hard work put in by SOAP members does not go unnoticed. “I’d like to first thank everyone that showed loyalty to the organization this past semester, and a special thanks to my officers and members; I couldn’t have done it without you all!” Bailey said.

Student Operated Activity Planning meets Mondays at 9 p.m. in the State Room, and Bailey welcomes new faces: “Come out and have a say in what comes to campus. It’s your tuition money, what do you want to see?”
