Despite of the bad weather, the bleachers were full for the basketball tournament for Haiti that took place Thursday, January 21. There were sixteen student teams and two faculty teams.Overall, the event raised $3,700 for relief for Haiti.
Two hundred and fifteen dollars of this grand total was raised from concessions alone.
Concessions were run by three of ConcordUniversity’s Bonner Scholars: Allena King, Erica White, and Jennifer Largin. Allena King said, “All of the food and drinks were donated by local churches.” People from the community also baked cookies and bought food and drinks.
Amanda Smith, Megan Smith, and Andre Bown originally suggested that something should be done to help Haiti. These students took the initiative to organize an event to bring in money and supplies to give Haiti some relief. Amanda said, “We met the morning after the earthquake for prayer and decided that we wanted to do something tangible.”
Amanda Smith and Megan Smith have both visited Haiti while Andre Bown is actually from Haiti. Andre said, “This is amazing being from Haiti. It was a really good turnout. I’m very happy with it.” Amanda said, “We are excited beyond belief about how many people are here.”
Allen Smith said, “It’s good any time people come together on a common cause. It was great to see students show initiative and pull the event together. It’s good to see all the heart involved from the people who put it together.”
