On Thursday, January 28, 2010 around nine o'clock at night different students from the surrounding Mercer County area came out to the first interest meeting about the 2010 collegiate bowling league between the local colleges: Bluefield College, Bluefield State College, and Concord University at Mountaineer Bowling Lanes in Bluefield, West Virginia. Several minutes before the event was to start, the parking lot for the bowling alley was full of cars with only a couple of spaces open, and once inside the number of students occupied all but a few of the bowling lanes in the entire alley. The turnout from Concord included different individuals coming out interested in joining a team for the league, close knit groups of friends coming out for recreation, and different sororities and fraternities coming out to practice for the upcoming league.

Starting at nine o'clock that night and lasting until around midnight, about sixty students from all three of the schools signed up onto different teams to participate in the six week bowling league and were permitted to practice with their teams in preparation for next week's first game of the league. Mountaineer Bowling Lanes provided these practice sessions, consisting of three full league style games, free of charge for all students that had signed up for the short season league as well as those students that were still debating about whether or not to join. Currently, there are 15 teams between the three schools that have signed up for this year's collegiate bowling league so far, but individuals and teams are still able to sign up until tomorrow Thursday, February 4th, 2010 at nine o'clock tonight.

The actual short season league will officially begin this week on Thursday, February 4th, 2010 at nine o'clock and will consist of three consecutive bowling games as in most bowling leagues, and it is advised that the people who are participating in the tournament show up at least ten minutes before nine for any practice that a team might want to get in before the official start. As of right now there are only two teams from Bluefield State College participating in the tournament with the majority of the league consisting of students from Bluefield College and Concord University, but in the past two years more teams have come out for Bluefield State than have this year. Mountaineer Bowling Lanes is still encouraging all students to sign up for the event.

Whether you are an individual looking to join a preexisting team or a group of friends wishing to create a team, Mountaineer Bowling Lanes will arrange individuals and teams for the league. For the past two years as well as for this year, different directors from the schools have been in charge of spreading the word about the collegiate league, and Bill Fraley has been responsible for spreading the word about the collegiate bowling league. Each team for the league will consist of four people that have either signed up together or have been paired together to create a complete team, and for every week that a person is in the league will cost seven dollars. For more information about joining the third annual collegiate bowling league for Bluefield College, Bluefield State College, and Concord University call Mountaineer Bowling Lanes at (304) 325-7037.
